Maudabawn Cultural Centre

Distance:    Approx 10 minutes

This delightful stone walled, thatched building, set among the drumlins of East Cavan in Cootehill is a charming location for a cultural tourism and business centre. Display boards and a superb 20 minute audio visual interpret the landscape and history of this area.

One of the earliest Court Tombs in Ireland lies close by. A qualified tour guide can accompany a tour group to this site, where you can walk and view 600 years of Irish history. 

The Maudabawn Cultural Centre organises school visits and seminars on heritage related topics. Some themes include Exploring Our Heritage Among the Drumlins and weekend seminars on many historical themes usually incorporating a guided tour.

Killinkere Visitor Farm

Distance:    Approx 20 minutes

Family run farm is a great place to visit all year round as it is an actual working farm. It is possible to view and interact with all activities and animals whatever the season. For instance we cultivate, plant and harvest potatoes, oats, flax, cabbage, carrots. We breed and keep old spot pigs, dexta cattle, all types of traditional farmyard hens, ducks. For the young and not so young deer, rabbits, guinea pigs, doves, chicks, chin chulas, horses, donkeys, goats, lambs. We give pony rides, tractor/trailer rides, heritage trail walks, nature walks. Afterwards enjoy Tea and Scones in our old farmhouse.

Cavan County Museum

Distance:    Approx 20 minutes

The Cavan County Museum is located in a magnificent 19th century building designed by William Hague, in Ballyjamesduff County Cavan. It is beautifully situated amid extensive grounds, nestling among the East Cavan lakes and drumlins.

It was established in 1996 by Cavan County Council to collect, conserve, document and display all aspects of the culture, history and traditions of County Cavan in an informative and entertaining manner, promoting an awareness of Cavan’s rich heritage. 

A tour of the Museum through its elegant exhibition galleries provides an insight into the heritage of Cavan from antiquity to recent times. Exhibition galleries trace the history and heritage of County Cavan from prehistoric and pre-Christian time, to rural life as it was in the 1950's. Rare and precious artefacts on display include the 4000 year old Killycluggin stone, three-faced Corleck Head, the 1000 year old Lough Errol Log Boat, medieval Sheela-na-gigs and the 18th Century Cavan Mace. There are also many costumes, implements and machinery that were used by our ancestors on display.

There is also a small coffee shop and gift shop on site.

St Kilian's Heritage Centre

Distance:    Approx 50 minutes

St Kilian's Heritage Centre, in Virginia County Cavan, celebrates the life of St Kilian, a 7th Century saint born in Mullagh. 

During his missions Kilian was martyred and is now one of the patron saints of Wurzburg in Germany. His life and death are represented at this heritage centre.

A 15 minute film illustrates the life of St Kilian, his martyrdom, his substantial cult following and the Germany/Mullagh connection. 

An exhibition brings to life the work of the Irish missionaries in Europe during the 6th and 7th centuries, through maps, photographs, statuettes, manuscripts and art.

There are also Ogham stones that were found in Cavan on display. As well as a craft shop, tourist information centre and tea room; serving home made produce.

Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark

Distance:    Approx 90 minutes

Waterfalls, old abbeys, megalithic tombs, forests, fabulous landscapes and amazing show caves are among some of the attractions. An ongoing programme of events takes place in the Geopark, where people can explore the landscapes and enjoy the wonder of the natural environment.

The world’s first international Geopark has been established in Counties Cavan and Fermanagh. The existing Geopark at Marble Arch Caves has been successfully expanded into County Cavan and UNESCO have recognised the expansion. The Geopark status has been achieved due the distinctive geological landscapes in the area which are home to unique archaeology, culture and heritage.

Monaghan County Museum

The Monaghan County Museum, in Monaghan Town, boasts a comprehensive collection of artefacts including medieval crannógs native to Monaghan and perhaps one of the most prominent finds of the region: the Cross of Clogher dated to the 14th century.

The Monaghan County Museum has been awarded the Council of Europe museum prize and the Gulbenkian (a Norwich Union award).

The Monaghan County Museum encapsulates the archaeology of the local region and is also actively involved in many archaeological excavations in the local area.

Patrick Kavanagh Rural and Literary Resource Centre

Distance:    Approx 30 minutes

The Patrick Kavanagh Rural and Literary Resource Centre is located in the home town and birthplace of the poet and novelist Patrick Kavanagh. It displays a permanent exhibition dedicated to his life and work. It features a 60 seat audio visual theatre and a research library.

Also on view are twelve specially commissioned paintings illustrating Kavanagh's epic poem 'The Great Hunger', a miniature model depicting Kavanagh's classic, 'A Christmas Childhood', Kavanagh's death mask and other memorabilia associated with the poet. 

The special feature of the Patrick Kavanagh Centre is the unique performance tour of Kavanagh Country, which takes in many local sites immortalised by Innishkeen's most famous son, with anecdotes, historical facts, wild rumours and even the odd poem along the way.

Wildlife and Heritage Centre

This purpose-built Wildlife Exhibition & Educational Centre opened in June 2000, displays one of the largest privately owned collections of mounted birds and mammals in Ireland.
The Centre displays 200 species of Irish fauna in five specially designed habitat sets; River/Lake/Coastal, Bog & Moorland, Woodland, Farmland and Garden. 
These specially designed sets depict the mammals and birds in their own natural environment. The Centre's aim is to represent these habitats as realistically as possible. This presents a unique opportunity to see 'close-up' many rare and beautiful species of Irish wildlife. Rare birds such as the 'Merlin', 'Corncrake', 'Bittern' and the unique 'Brown and White Magpie'. Mammals including the rare 'Pine Martin' and also all the common animals found in Ireland.
